Alison Vincent Edwards - Restaurant Manager St Georges Hospital - NHS Trust |
St George's Hospital in Tooting is one of the biggest NHS hospitals in the country, who also run services at the Bolingbroke Hospital in Battersea and the Wolfson Rehabilitation Centre in Wimbledon. Originally founded in 1733, it was based for two and a half centuries at what is now the Lanesborough Hotel, at the corner of Hyde Park. In the 18th century what was then known as Lanesborough House was an ideal location, on what was then the edge of London, next door to the fresh air and greenery of Hyde Park.
Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, St George's established itself as a leading teaching hospital, and many of its doctors, such as Thomas Young, became famous in the history of science and medicine for their advances. The Lanesborough site gradually expanded as medicine advanced, and the first lecture in the new Medical School was given in 1803.
